Hi I am about to use a spade drill for the first time and need some help. Drilling 304 stainless solid bar 2" deep using a 59/64 spade drill with carbide insert, should I drill a pilot hole? Should I peck drill? Speed and feed? The real benefit to a spade drill IMO is that you have multiple sizes in one shank. We have inserts varying from 1" to 1.375" stepped by 1/8" and several metric sizes, but it doesn't get used a lot. On the other hand, we have a couple insert drills for the lathe just to "get in there" before a boring bar.
